On May 11, Episode 5 of Jay B's video collection for DIVE Studio's health and wellness app, Mindset, was released. Titled "The Weight of Leading GOT7," the "Switch It Up" singer shared what it's really like to be the leader of the group.

Jay B kicked off the episode by unveiling that he had not wanted to be GOT7's leader. As a matter of fact, he asked JYP Entertainment not to give him the position.
He said, "When I was young, it was hard to accept the title of 'Leader of GOT7.' So, I told the agency many times that I didn't wish to be the leader."

The "ENCORE" singer explained that one of the reasons is that he doesn't fit the position because he is not particularly skilled in verbal communication which a leader must have. Jay B only used to be a dancer who is into B-boying. He stated, "I'm not all that good at expressing myself with words."

He continued, "Unlike Jay B, Lim Jae Beom (his real name) is actually very quiet and timid. Since I have a job where I have to show and promote myself to the public, my personality has changed, but back then, I didn't talk much. So, I often wondered if this job was right for me."
The second reason why Jay B didn't wish to be GOT7's leader is that leadership naturally comes with many responsibilities, and it was too much for someone so young. At the time the boy group debuted, Jay B was only around 20 years old.

He detailed, "When there was a problem, it was my responsibility to coordinate with the agency and the band members. I was a bit wary and quite scared of having such big responsibilities at a young age. But thankfully, GOT7 received so much love."
Although Jay B hesitated to be GOT7's leader at first, he eventually led the group, and luckily things appeared to get better as time passed by. However, Jay B had more responsibilities after all members decided not to renew their contracts with JYP Entertainment.

"But as soon as we decided not to renew [our contracts] with JYP, I suddenly became tense. I felt like I had to hold onto this moment and our identity. Even though we remained as a group, as we all went our separate ways, I felt I should act as the strong thread or the string that keeps us connected. I realized it was up to me to make the plans for the team activities and also long-term future for the team," GOT7 Jay B elaborated.

Despite his worries of becoming GOT7's leader, Jay B demonstrated his capabilities of being one of the best leaders in K-pop. He has learned more about legal issues to claim the trademarks and copyrights related to GOT7 in the right way.
At present, the "Hard Carry" singer doesn't see his role as the group's leader "burdensome" like before. "Before, the role of a leader was burdensome, but now, I think more about ways to maintain this time well, maybe even a bit more than other members, truth be told," he stated.
