THIS Is the Only K-Pop Release to Land on The New York Times' 'Best Songs of 2022' List

On Dec. 9 local time, The New York Times published its year-end roundup of their picks for the best songs of the year, which spans various genres.

Among the 70 tracks chosen is NewJeans' "Cookie," which ranked No. 11 under "Jon Caramanica's Top 202" list.

Jon praised "Cookie" as the "best song from the debut EP" by the rookie girl group. He also commented that the "most striking" thing about this release is "its ease - no maximalism, no theater."

Jon Caramanica further wrote, "Simply a cheerful extended metaphor over an updated take on the club-oriented R&B of a couple of decades ago, finished off with a tasteful Jersey club breakdown."

While NewJeans' "Cookie" didn't rank high on The NewYork Times' "Best Songs of 2022," it's still a remarkable entry since it is the only K-pop song included.

"Cookie" is one of the three title tracks off of the 4th gen K-pop girl group's debut album "New Jeans," which was released in August. It is a dance pop song with adorable lyrics. The rookie act commented on how a cookie can be used to persuade the person they like into approaching them first.

Right after the album's release, "Cookie" debuted on various major Korean music charts. It entered at No. 3 on Bugs, No. 30 on MelOn's real-time chart, No. 50 on Genie, and No. 71 on MelOn's Top 100.

On Spotify, "Cookie" garnered 418,354 streams on its first day, and in its first week, it accumulated 3.07 million streams. As of Dec. 8, the song had already surpassed 50 million streams, and on the same day, it rose to No. 20 on Spotify's Daily Top Songs chart in South Korea.

Congratulations to NewJeans on making it to The New York Times' "Best Songs of 2022" with "Cookie"!
